Antoine Augustin Cournot was a French philosopher, mathematician, and economist, known for his contribution to the formalization of economic theory.
He is credited with being the first to formulate the law of supply and demand. Cournot was born on August 28, , in Gray, Haute-Saône, France, into the family of a prosperous merchant named Claude Cournot.
Education and Early Career

After completing his studies, he spent four years as a junior clerk in a law firm while independently studying philosophy. In , as part of his preparation for entrance exams to the prestigious École Normale Supérieure, he worked as a part-time teacher at the Royal College of Besançon.
