He spent part of his childhood outside the United States. In , he graduated from an American high school in Würzburg, Germany. After high school, he attended Mesa Community College in Mesa, Arizona, and then transferred to the University of San Diego, where he played for the university basketball team, the Toreros, for two seasons. In , after graduating from college, Brown joined the NBA team, the Denver Nuggets, first as a video coordinator and later as a scout.

He spent a total of five seasons with the Nuggets.

In , Brown became an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards under head coach Bernie Bickerstaff. He worked in this position for two seasons and then became a scout for the team for one more season after Bickerstaff's dismissal.
