Among various honors for his work are a Catholic Book Award, three Pushcart Prizes, the John Burroughs Award for Nature Essays, Foreword Reviews's Book of the Year Award in , and, puzzling him to this day, the Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
